Lisa Goebel “Geena”

Finally a moment to sit down and write (at least I’m writing this before the show is over?). I am beyond thrilled to be part of this fantastic show, The Park. Stanley Park is Vancouver’s very first park, and in my opinion it’s the most beautiful place in the city. Currently in my graduating term at Studio 58 – this show has given me the opportunity to be a little more aggressive…and progressive. My character ‘Geena’ is an environmental activist, which hits close to home as my lifelong best friend and inspiration Ashley Fruno is quite the activist herself (Currently working with PETA India – she’s Google worthy).

Our three week rehearsal process has been a wonderful whirl wind script edits, songs changing, cramming as many people as we can into small crevasses around campus to rehearse, loose chickens…and way too much fun.
People of Vancouver…I hope you will be able to join us for a fun night in The Park. Live theatre needs your support. I look forward to seeing you!

Matt MacDonald-Bain

If there’s one thing that I’m excited about this winter, it’s this musical. I’ve been involved in this project for a little while now, helping the creative team pitch this musical to the faculty of Studio as well as performing bastardized versions of “The Park” songs for building openings and other events that needed a musical touch. And now I’m blessed to be part of the cast in this project!

Growing up in the Vancouver area and working in the landscaping/gardening industry from time to time should come in handy while playing the role of John, the Stanley Park maintenance worker in this fantastic musical! What a way to start my final term here at Studio 58!

David Hudgins — Director of THE PARK

Just got home from “The Park” and boy, are my limbs tired!! This is a very exciting time to be around Studio 58 where the air is buzzing. I just got home from the first night of rehearsals. Feeling good about the show. A wonderful response from the other actors in STEW who heard the first read. Some recent script changes have added immensely to the story. And the songs themselves make for a really satisfying journey. I’ve got a really good feeling about the group.  Team Park can’t be beat!

MEET THE CAST — Dustin Freeland “GABE”

What can I say?  Sometimes dreams do come true.  Ever since I got wind that three very talented friends of mine were toiling away, creating an original musical masterpiece, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.  Voila!  I am!  Playing Gabe the evil developer oooh ahhh!!

I’m very thrilled about working with everyone in the cast and working with David Hudgins again…sort of again.  David and I had the unique experience of working on Bye Bye Birdie at Studio 58 only I wasn’t exactly cast in it.  I was thrown into the role of Conrad Birdie last minute on account that Jay Clift, the principle actor for the role, came down with a very bad case of laryngitis.  I was given 7 hours to memorize script, songs and blocking and then lobbed on stage for what was sure to be a very exciting evening.  Thankfully everything went marvelous! (although, I heard rumour, David Hudgins was gripping the SM booth wall so hard he left claw marks in it.)

I now look eagerly to working on another musical and this time with the benefit of a rehearsal process.  It’s gonna be a great show and a great experience.  See you there!

MEET THE CAST! — Katherine Ramdeen – “News Anchor”

Hey!

My name is Katherine Ramdeen. This will be my very first show at Studio 58!  I am so excited to be working on THE PARK. A,, Musical wasn’t what I had in mind for my first Studio 58 performance, but I am thrilled that David Hudgins and Kathryn Shaw have given me this opportunity.

I moved to Vancouver in August 2008 from Edmonton, Alberta once accepted into the program at Studio 58. Living in the ice tundra of Edmonton for 21 years, Vancouver was a breath of fresh air! I remember my very first visit to Stanley Park; I went biking around it with a friend and stopped at the many beautiful viewpoints and beaches–fond memories indeed.

I know THE PARK will be a fun and fulfilling experience in my budding career. Can’t wait to see you all there!

Blog Entry — Hannah Johnson, Co-Writer of THE PARK

Hey folks,

My name is Hannah Johnson and I’m a co-writer of THE PARK.

Hannah Johnson, Co-Writer of THE PARK

Like Anton and Ben, I’m a student at Studio 58. The boys approached me back in the spring of 2009 about a musical project they wanted my help with. They sat me down in Ben’s living room and blew my mind with an early version of our epic opening number, “Springtime Happening.” Right then and there, I knew I had to be involved. Since I’m a born-and-raised Vancouverite, the idea of a musical about Stanley Park seemed fun, fresh, and exciting. Over the next few weeks the three of us worked long hours hashing out plot ideas, writing and re-writing lyrics, and developing our cast of characters. We submitted a rough draft of our script to the STEW adjudication committee, and were thrilled to learn that Studio 58 would be producing it in January, 2010.

This process has been really exciting for me for two main reasons. Firstly, although writing has always been my passion, I never would have guessed in a million years that I could co-write a musical. Don’t get me wrong, I love music (and musicals, for that matter) but my talents in that department are limited to playing the kazoo and singing in the shower. For someone as un-musical as me, working with two amazing musicians and composers like Ben and Anton is a huge gift. It has been such a pleasure to watch their process and listen as they construct a whole world out of their unique musical styles. Secondly, writing with them is a laugh and a half. I’ve lost count of the number of times a discussion over a certain idea, lyric, or piece of dialogue has dissolved into hilarity. And it’s been such an amazing experience for me as a writer to work so collaboratively with them. I think we’ve all learned a lot about putting the project ahead of our own egos, and letting go of ideas even if we really loved them at first (David Suzuki flying in from the grid, a wise-cracking squirrel sidekick, you get the idea.) As a result, THE PARK has evolved a lot over the past few months, and I am so excited to watch it grow even more once we get it on its feet

Thanks for following our progress this far! Keep checking back for updates as we head into production, and don’t forget to put us in your calendar. THE PARK is a show that you don’t want to miss!

Bye for now,

Hannah

(Hannah Johnson has written another show playing in STEW called Disappearing Acts, a one-act play  in PROGRAM A of the festival.  Don’t miss it!  She is one talented mofo!

Blog Entry – Ben Elliott (Co-Writer, Co-Composer and Co-Musical Director of THE PARK!)

Greetings!

Benjamin Elliott here, I’m co-writer, co-composer, and co-musical director of THE PARK (as well as 1/3 of Benannahton – a creative tripod).

THE PARK is the first musical I’ve co-written, and it’s a perfect fit for me. Being born into a musical family and number 3 of 4 kids, I’ve developed a knack for music and performance (had to get my parents attention somehow), and a musical is the best of both worlds; what with music and acting all intertwined. Writing this musical has also been a great way to explore the city of Vancouver, a town that never stops growing on me.

I look forward to filling you in on what’s happening down the road as we get ready to put this puppy up on the Studio 58 stage at the end of January and hope to see you all there!

Cheers,

Ben
